ELF-VLF studies in India: Search for transient luminous events and earthquake precursors

ELF-VLF (300Hz-30kHz) waves radiated by both natural (e.g., lightning discharges) and man-made (e.g., VLF transmitters) sources are one of the potential tools for the upper space environment investigation of ionosphere and magnetosphere. Indian Institute of Geomagnetism (IIG) operates VLF receivers in India and the installed VLF stations are one of the lowest latitude located in world. Continuous monitoring of ELF-VLF electromagnetic waves allow for the quantitative physical analysis of electromagnetic phenomena in the ionosphere and magnetosphere such as: Lightning discharges, radio atmospheric, whistlers, VLF emissions, Lightning induced electron precipitation (LEP), cosmic gamma-ray flares, solar flares, geomagnetic storms, ionospheric earthquake precursor studies, etc. The presentation is the overview of the ELF/VLF waves as subject, its probing potentiality and studies carried out over Indian low latitude region. Highlights of the latest addition of experiment and results related to up-ward lightning discharge radiated phenomena of Transient Luminous Events (TLE’s) will also be covered.
