Laboratory of complex study and monitoring of geodynamic processes in the Kuril-Kamchatka subduction zone (107)

The main goal of the laboratory is to conduct scientific research aimed at developing new joint analysis and interpretation of ground-based and satellite geophysical observations and at their applications for studying the geodynamics of the subduction zones in the Russian Far East. In particular, the activity of our laboratory is aimed at applying to the analysis of geophysical data new generation of information technologies that are expected provide a transition in geophysical monitoring systems of volcanic and seismically active areas based on analysis of Big Data with using machine learning and artificial intelligence methods. The laboratory also conducts field projects in the Kuril-Kamchatka subduction zone. The application of advanced methods to the analysis of existing and new experimental data will allow us developing improved structural and dynamical models of subduction zones and areas of volcanic activity.

Another important task of the laboratory is to train a new generation of young researchers in the fields of geophysics and geology for their subsequent involvement in Russian scientific-research institutes.

The laboratory includes staff members from the IPE RAS, the IVS FEB RAS, the Geophysical Survey of the RAS, and the Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU). Also undergraduate and graduate students of the IPE RAS of the MSU also take part in research.
